Step 1
Use your kung fu technique to attack the three gates. While most martial arts styles focus on the upper and middle gates, the neck and the torso, Southern Shaolin kung fu focuses on all three gates, giving as much attention to the lower gate, or the legs and groin, as it does to the upper gates.
-
Step 2
Attack the upper gate by throwing punches, clawing or even kicking to the neck and head. While Southern Shaolin style was created as a hand-to-hand combat style, you can also use traditional weapons such as sticks and spears to attack the upper gate.
-
Step 3
Strike the middle gate using your kung fu technique. The middle gate may be the most difficult to attack, as it can be blocked by the arms and legs; however, it also holds one of the most delicate locations on the human body --the stomach. You can strike the middle gate using kicks, punches or grabs whenever your opponent lets his guard down enough for your attack.
-
Step 4
Work the lower gate, an area of focus which gives those trained in Southern Shaolin kung fu the upper hand. Of all of the gates, the lower gate is the most often overlooked and the least defended, therefore your opponent is not expecting you to kick, punch or grab the lower gate.
