Step 1
Practice kicking as high as possible to gain form and master the kung fu style; however, when used in competition or combat, it is rare that you will kick higher than waist or chest height. The Southern Shaolin front kick is different than other martial arts kicks in that the toes are not turned up during the kick.
-
Step 2
Begin in the basic four-point stance with your dominant leg, or kicking leg, a few feet behind the other. Bend slightly at the knees and place your hands in defense position with your fists tight and held high near your shoulders.
-
Step 3
Follow the basics of any front kick, regardless of your target. Shift your weight onto your non-kicking leg and bend your kicking leg at the knee, bring it high to your chest. Perform your chosen kick, and return to the bent leg position before relaxing the leg behind you into the four-point stance.
-
Step 4
Swing your kick forward, pointing your toes if you are aiming for a groin kick. After making impact, pull your leg back as fast as possible and return to your four-point stance. Flex your toes and aim with your heel and the sole of your foot if your target is the stomach or chest of your opponent. Again, return to your four point stance immediately after impact.
-
Step 5
Work on each step of your kick slowly to master the Southern Shaolin kung fu style. As you perfect the moves, speed up your kicking.
