Drummers are typically very energetic musicians who can get carried away with the beats. They love to go off on solos that create a sound that makes you want to get up and dance. For a drummer to play a slow beat on the drums, it takes the ability to appreciate the song and the subtleties of his arrangement. Good drummers prepare for every kind of music.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Imagine the slow song in your head, and feel the mood that it is intended to stir in the listener. When you realize how important your slow beat is to the tenor of the music, it is easier to control your innate need to let the sticks fly.

  2. Step 2

Learn some basic slow beats, which can be used to accompany many different tunes with only minor adjustments.

  3. Step 3

Play along with recorded music before joining your band mates on a slow song. Listen carefully so you can hear if you have passed the place where you were supposed to be with your beats. Fall into a trance to achieve a slow, steady, cool beat.

  4. Step 4

Practice, practice, practice. Every professional drummer says she got where she is by practicing. If you don't have a room designated for practicing, practice on a counter, and use a pillow to muffle sounds. Perfect finding the beat and keeping it steady.
