When it comes to handling a deck of cards, the person who knows the most tricks and impressive ways of holding them is always welcome. Not to mention they are a helpful icebreaker at a party to get people talking. Here's how to perform a basic Ribbon Spread with a deck of playing cards.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Deck of cards
  • Table cloth (optional)
  • Table
  1. Step 1

Hold the cards face down with your middle and ring finger on the top edge of the cards, your thumb at the base and your index finger along the side.

  2. Step 2

Place the deck of cards on a table. It will help to be on a tablecloth or felt covering (also known as a magician's table cover), as this will help grab the cards.

  3. Step 3

Spread the cards across the table. To complete the Ribbon Spread, simply move your hand across the table, allowing the cards to release by slightly lifting your index finger. It may take several practices to get a nice even Ribbon Spread, but keep at it, and you'll master it in no time.

Tips & Warnings
  • Enhance the Ribbon Spread by making an arch shape with your hand as you spread them across. This commonly is done in casinos when they are shuffling or changing out cards.
  • To pick up the cards, simply raise the first card that you set down and scoop them along collecting them in your hand as you go. Because they are all overlapping, they should scoop easily.
