How to Use Revolvers for Target Shooting

Target shooting is competitive and hones your shooting skills. Using a revolver for target shooting involves the same basic methods of aiming and firing, however, loading it is slightly different than loading a semi-automatic pistol or rifle.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Practice good gun safety. Never point a revolver at anyone and treat it as if it is loaded at all times. Transport your revolver in an approved holster until you're ready to shoot. When carrying the revolver in your hand, keep the barrel pointing towards the ground.

  2. Step 2

Slide the cylinder to the side and load the gun by rotating it and putting one bullet into each hole. Insert each bullet fully or the cylinder will not close properly.

  3. Step 3

Click the cylinder back into place. At this point, there is a bullet in the chamber, ready for firing, since the cylinder hole is a part of the chamber. Handle the gun with care.

  4. Step 4

Arrange your targets, making sure the area behind them is safe. Shooting at an approved target range or on rural land with targets positioned against a dirt bank is acceptable. Check with your local ordinances before you shoot on private land.

  5. Step 5

Release the safety and aim your revolver, holding the gun firmly while squeezing the trigger. Be prepared for a recoil when the gun fires. Generally, the larger the caliber, the greater the recoil.

  6. Step 6

Stand with both arms steadying the gun or use a shooting table to brace your arms when you fire.

Tips & Warnings
  • Be creative when finding targets to shoot. Save old milk jugs and fill them with water to provide a target that explodes when directly hit. Clean up all the debris before leaving the area.

on 4/2/2008 Revolvers don't have safeties. Also you might want to mention pulling the hammer back. I found these tips to be useless. No mention of proper stance or grip. Anybody can load a revolver, the technique is what requires guidance.
