Step 1
Learn the names of the spaces on the staff of a piece of music. The spaces in the treble clef or right hand are F, A, C, E. The names of the spaces in the bass clef, or left hand, are A, C, E and G.

Identify and learn the names of the lines on the staff of a piece of music. The names of the lines in the treble clef, or right hand, are E, G, B, D, F. The names of the lines in the lines in the bass clef, or left hand are G, B, D, F, A.

Step 3
Memorize the circle of fifths chart or use it to learn what keys have what flats. The circle of fifths names all major and minor keys and their corresponding flats and sharps. Find flats on the left side of the chart and sharps on the right.

Step 4
Look at the key signature on a piece of music. A key signature with one flat located on B is always the key of F. The key of F has one flat.

Step 5
Count the number of flats on the key signature on a piece of music. A quick way to identify the key you're in is by looking at the next to the last flat from left to right. This flat names the key.

Step 6
Remember the number of flats that correspond with a particular key. Ex: one flat is the key of F. Two flats is the key of B flat. Three flats is the key of E flat.
