Sewing a bias strip, or binding, is usually the last step done to complete a quilt. A bias strip connects the front and back parts of the quilt together. It's a thin piece of fabric that is sewn to give the quilt a finished look. It's important that the bias strip is sewn correctly to ensure that the all the pieces of the quilt are sewn together securely.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Cut the bias strip fabric into 2-inch wide strips. If you need to use more than one piece of fabric, cut the corners at a 90-degree angle and sew the ends together. Cut enough fabric to go around all four sides of the quilt.

  2. Step 2

Fold the strip together with the right side of the fabric facing outwards. Turn under 1/4 inch of one side of the fabric and iron it to make a tight fold.

  3. Step 3

Start on one long side of the quilt and pin the folded edge of the bias strip that you just ironed, to the edge of the top part of the quilt. Do not start at a corner, but along the side of the quilt. Starting at the corner will make it more difficult to connect the bias strips together once you've sewn all the way around the quilt.

  4. Step 4

Stitch the binding to the top part of the quilt. Sew it so the seam is 1/4 inch away from the raw edge. Continue sewing until you've reached you're starting point.

  5. Step 5

Overlap the bias strip 1/4 inch when you return to your starting point. Trim off any excess. The bias strip should now be sewn along the entire front part of the quilt.

  6. Step 6

Wrap the bias strip around the raw edges of the quilt so it's folded over to the back piece. To attach it to the back of the quilt, you will need to hand sew the bias strip.

  7. Step 7

Stay along the 1/4-inch seam you sewed to attach the bias strip to the top fabric. Staying along this seam will ensure that you've connect both the top and back fabrics along with the padding in the middle of the quilt. Sew around all four sides of the quilt until you're back at the starting point.
