Things You'll Need:
- Material
- Newsprint or butcher paper
- Craft scissors
- Sewing shears
- Straight pins
- Sewing machine
- Coordinating thread
-
Step 1
Trace the outline of an old Christmas stocking onto a large piece of butcher or newspaper. Cut out the shape using paper or craft shears. Do not use sewing shears on paper because it can dull the blades.
-
Step 2
Place the material that you will use for the back of the stocking face down on your work surface. Lay the pattern on the material. Pin the pattern down. Cut out the back piece.
-
Step 3
Cut 3-by-3 inch squares out of several pieces of coordinating material. Cut approximately 30 squares total.
-
Step 4
Set out the squares of material so that there are four squares per row and about seven columns.
-
Step 5
Arrange the different patterns of material so that they alternate throughout the rows and columns. Do not put two pieces side by side that are from the same print.
-
Step 6
Repeat the pattern of squares if you desire, or put the squares down in a random fashion.
-
Step 7
Sew the squares together to complete each row. Sew each row together. Place the quilted piece face up, and pin the stocking pattern to it. Cut it out.
