How to Cut the Stocking Pattern for a Quilted Christmas Stocking

Save

A homemade Christmas stocking adds a wonderful touch to the holidays. Cut the stocking pattern for a quilted Christmas stocking and make a quilted stocking for each member of your family using their favorite color or holiday motif.

Things You'll Need

  • Christmas stocking pattern
  • Fabric (amount according to the stocking size)
  • Sewing marker
  • Scissors
  • Lay your fabric on a flat surface with the fabric side you want to show facing down.

  • Place the stocking pattern piece onto the fabric in the top corner to allow enough fabric for the remaining pattern piece. Make sure the fabric lays smooth under the pattern. It shouldn't be gathered or wrinkled.

  • Trace around the pattern piece using a sewing marker, but make the tracing slightly larger than the pattern piece so there's enough space to sew the seams together.

  • Cut out the material for the back of the Christmas stocking following the line that you traced.

  • Draw the exact shape as the back part of the stocking to use for the stocking front.

  • Use your scissors to cut out the stocking front.

Tips & Warnings

  • You don't need to be exact when you cut the stocking pattern for a quilted Christmas stocking. The extra fabric around your pattern piece allows for room for the seam when it is sewn.
  • Remember the fabric for the front of the stocking will have quilted squares so it doesn't matter which side of the fabric faces front.
  • Be aware that if children are helping with this project, working with scissors can be dangerous. Always provide proper supervision.
