How to Putt on a Disc Golf Course

When discussing the importance of putting, golfers usually bring up one tried-and-true mantra: "Drive for show, putt for dough." Not surprisingly, this principle applies to disc golf just as well as its clubbed cousin. Precise putting in disc golf requires a light touch, good technique and choosing the right disc.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Pick a disc that glides easily and flies straight to be your putter. Putts and approach shots rely on finesse, so you don't need a disc capable of withstanding powerful throws to putt accurately.

  2. Step 2

Hold the disc using a conventional backhand grip. Your index finger should run along the edge of the disc, while your other fingers should fan out along its underside.

  3. Step 3

Stand with your dominant leg forward and distribute your weight evenly between it and your other leg.

  4. Step 4

Rock back just a bit, then shift your weight forward as you throw the disc directly at the chains. Some players like to lean forward before rocking back, so don't be afraid to experiment with the motion until it feels natural to you.

  5. Step 5

Follow through your shot by raising your throwing arm into the air and lifting your back leg off of the ground. This improves the consistency of your toss and makes your putting more reliable.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you're overshooting your putts, loft your shots on an arc instead of driving them straight at the chains.
  • Know your putting range before taking a shot at the chains. If you're outside of your comfort zone, don't hesitate to lay up instead of going for the hole.
