Proper alignment is the key to better putting in golf. Once the weight is distributed on the back foot and the stance is set up over the ball, getting the hands, head and body lined up to see the ball and the line of the putt all the way to the hole are the secrets to success. Here's how to do it.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Address the ball with your feet parallel about shoulder width apart, weight on the back foot and in line with the target. Flex your legs slightly with your knees bent in toward each other. The ball should be about a foot beyond your toes and midway between your feet.

  2. Step 2

Place the putter behind the ball, and bend over the club with your head lined up behind the ball. This head position allows you to see the line of the putt all the way to the hole.

  3. Step 3

Position your arms to form a V from your shoulders to your hands. Move your hands slightly ahead of the ball so the sole of the putter is flat to the ground and the center of the putter lines up with the ball.

  4. Step 4

Use a pendulum swing with the arms stiffened to bring the head of the putter straight back and forward through the ball, keeping the sole of the club parallel to the ground. The length of the backswing and forward swing depend on the distance from the hole. The farther away the hole is, the longer the backswing and forward swing.

  5. Step 5

Finish the swing with center of the club face pointed at the target.

Tips & Warnings
  • Most putters have a center line inscribed in the top of the head to aid in getting the putter in proper alignment.
