Step 1
Learn as much as you can about the audience prior to your speaking engagement. Research their industry and be aware of their concerns. This enables you to write a fitting speech and sidestep comments offensive to your audience.
-
Step 2
Prepare your remarks for the event. Public speaking is an art form. Small, seemingly off-the-cuff comments are usually part of a well-rehearsed speech. Write the speech itself, and have a number of quips at the ready to interject into the presentation. For example, if the topic might spark a heated debate, it's wise to have some light humor to diffuse the situation and return the crowd to a receptive mode.
-
Step 3
Practice your speech repeatedly in front of a mirror until you can say it without cue cards. When you're ready, practice the speech in front of another person. Successful delivery depends upon your comfort level with the words you've written.
-
Step 4
Dress appropriately for the event. General business attire is usually acceptable, unless the event is black tie. (In which case you must rent a tuxedo if you're male, or wear an upscale black dress if you're female.) Remember, if you dress up for the event and find your audience is more casual, you can always dress down a suit. Simply remove your jacket and loosen the tie. For an extremely casual look, roll up the shirtsleeves and remove the tie. Being under-dressed for the occasion is a much larger problem.

Step 5
Arrive on time and ensure that you have had adequate rest. Mingle with the audience beforehand if appropriate. Use charm and finesse to be as engaging as possible with the crowd. The more the attendees can relate to you, the better they'll listen when the big moment arrives.
