Step 1
Create a timeless and simple updo hairstyle. This style is the basis for almost all updos, and it's easy to do on your own. Start with hair that isn't freshly washed so that it grips the pins and holds curl more readily.
-
Step 2
Add a shine serum to quell any frizziness or a volume booster at the roots for fine or thin hair. Section hair off and then use a medium barrel curling iron at a high setting and curl 1-inch sections, following up with hair spray.
-
Step 3
Pull out a few face framing strands and then pull the rest of your hair up into a high ponytail and secure with an elastic that matches your hair color. Alternately, you can create a deep or zig-zagging side part and then secure the hair in a low ponytail at the nape of the neck for a sleeker look. Then, rope hair into a very loose bun, leaving the lower third of the hair free. Secure this bun loosely with a thin elastic.

Step 4
Rope hair into a very loose bun, leaving the lower third of the hair free. Secure this bun loosely with a thin elastic.
-
Step 5
Arrange bobby pins by pinning individual curls into a loose bun. You can leave curls cascading down the back, up over the crown, or vertically on top of the bun to soften the look.
-
Step 6
Use a second mirror so that you can see what you're doing and arrange the curls until they are securely pinned and right where you want them. If you mess up, leave the pin alone and just grab another one. If you pull it out, you might unravel the whole style.

Step 7
Finish up with a decorative pin or clip at the nape of the neck or close to your temples, add glitter, or pin fresh flowers into the updo right before you leave. Spray with a bit more hairspray and then use a finishing spray to boost shine.
