Teaching preschool-aged children to work on the rings is more about getting them comfortable with hanging than it is about traditional gymnastics skills. Kids need to strengthen their grips and learn to maneuver by supporting their entire weight with their hands before moving on to traditional skills.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Begin with a set of training gymnastics rings that are low to the ground. Preschoolers need to be easily able to reach the rings or else they will be frightened.

  2. Step 2

Help the preschoolers grip the rings and do a basic swing. By swinging from their hands, they strengthen their fingers, hands and wrists, and have fun swinging back and forth.

  3. Step 3

Support the back of the gymnasts and help them lift their legs over their heads over as if they were going to flip.

  4. Step 4

Coach the preschoolers to begin lifting their legs out in front of them while hanging from the rings. By working this drill, the preschooler strengthens the back and stomach muscles, both of which are essential for future success.

  5. Step 5

Allow the preschoolers to progress as their skills grow. Some will be ready to move into working above the rings while others will need more time to develop the strength for such skills.

Tips & Warnings
  • It isn't recommended that preschoolers actually be allowed to flip on the gymnastics rings, as their bones and joints are tender and easily bent out of shape.
