Kids love to splash and play in a pool and it's best they take lessons to learn how to swim. If your kids are enrolled in an outdoor swim class this summer, take extra care with safety to prevent accidents and sunburn. Teach your child and yourself early to prepare them for a lifetime of safe fun in the sun.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Apply a high SPF. Don't forget the tops of ears and feet and lip balm with SPF. Cover the head with a hat, swim cap or put sunscreen on the scalp. Give children plenty of fluids and frequent visits to the shade.

  2. Step 2

Have the child drink fluids and be sure to apply aloe vera or hydrocortisone cream which will help with swelling and pain if the child gets a sunburn. A safe, over-the-counter child pain reliever like acetaminophen or ibuprofen may also be helpful.

  3. Step 3

Avoid relying on swimming instructors or pool staff to watch your child. Know where they are at all times, especially before and after class starts. Don't depend on floating rings or arm floats only.

  4. Step 4

Find a swimming class that emphasizes pool and swimming safety for children. The class should teach children what to do in and out of the water including diving rules, not touching pool drains and what to do if they or another child is in trouble.

Tips & Warnings
  • Studies suggest that even one childhood sunburn can double the chances of getting skin cancer later in life.
  • Experts recommend that children under 4 years of age are not developmentally ready to take swimming lessons.
  • Ask your doctor if a medication your child takes increases her chance of burning from higher sensitivity to UV rays.
