How to Staple Wires When Installing a Phone Jack

If you just moved the phone jack, you now have the decision of how to keep the wire from being in the way. The only thing that really keeps wire in the right area when you put in a phone jack is to staple it down. There are a few tips that aid in stapling the wire properly.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Wood staples
  • Hammer
  • Needle nosed pliers
  1. Step 1

Find the best location to staple the wire. You definitely don't want it to dangle down or be in the way. When you run a wire to the phone jack, staple the wires at intervals spaced far enough apart but not too far that it creates loose and dangling wires. Frequently, it's a good idea to place it next to the baseboard, where no one can trip on it.

  2. Step 2

Place the wire in the proper location. Put a staple over the wire. Make certain that the ends are on both sides and not in the middle of the wire. Improper placement can cause the it to malfunction, as it could pierce the wire.

  3. Step 3

Use a needle nose pliers to hold the staple in place. The staples are too small for the fingers to hold when you pound it in with the hammer.

  4. Step 4

Tap the staple in lightly. You want to have a little play for the wire to move slightly as it goes to the phone jack. If you hammer it down too tight the staple creates a crimp and also does not give easy access to remove it, if you decide to change the wire's location.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you have cable clips at home you can use these instead of staples, but they are more expensive.
