The vault is one of the primary tools in parkour's gravity defying toolbox. Understanding the basic mechanics of a vault lays a solid foundation for you to move on to more complex vaults and even to innovate your parkour moves in the future.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Scout out the obstacle you're trying to vault before you go for the vault. Pay specific attention to the launching section and, most importantly, the landing to make sure it is flat, spacious and relatively safe.

  2. Step 2

Imagine yourself going through the vault and make a rough plan as to how you to propel yourself over the object. While your plan should be reliable, it shouldn't be rigid as you execute it.

  3. Step 3

Take a moderate running start and approach the object you want to vault over. As you get to the object do a simulation jump onto it but don't commit to the jump. Instead, notice how you naturally approached the vault and think about ways to improve your approach.

  4. Step 4

Commit to your vault on the next try by running to the object, stepping into the vault and make sure you get a forward and upward jump off your launch pad. Use one hand and kick over the obstacle as with a lazy vault, use both hands to plant and bring your legs through as with a monkey vault or use any other combination to get you safely over the object.

  5. Step 5

Spot your landing once you're halfway through the jump and extend your lower body towards the landing. As you land, keep running through it to dissipate the energy of the vault or to continue into your next parkour move.
