History tells us that the art of origami was derived to make concrete shapes such as cranes or boats. The origami boat is regarded as origami for pure enjoyment, otherwise known as play origami. This origami sailboat is an intermediate level project that only appears to be more advanced.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

  • Square origami paper

Step1
Create the main shape of the origami boat. Crease and unfold the square origami paper diagonally in half.
Step2
Position the paper as a diamond and pinch the lower half approximately one finger width from the center crease up to make a ridge. Fold the ridge up so that it lands over the center crease.
Step3
Take one side point and fold the paper in half to meet the opposite side point.
Step4
Separate the sails from the boat. Fold the smaller triangle over the center towards the larger triangle. Make a mountain fold with the smaller triangle.
Step5
Form the boat part of the sailboat. Pull the open ended tip of the mountain fold down to form two side walls like a canoe.
Step6
Crease the side walls in towards the center of the canoe then fold each side up in opposite directions.
Step7
Fold the outside of each creased canoe wall in on itself towards the center. Invert the creases to complete the origami sail boat.

Tips & Warnings

  • If the color or design is one-sided, make sure the plain side faces up when beginning this craft so that the design ends up on the boat's sails.
  • Don't float the origami boat in water. Water can destroy the origami paper.
