How to Use an AutoBuster Lockout Tool

The AutoBuster tool is one of the most successful lockout tools on the market. However, the relatively complex design of the tool makes it one of the more difficult tools to use without damaging the locked car you're trying to open.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Remove any weatherstripping (rubber strips that prevent water from leaking into the car) by carefully peeling it away from the window at its source. This may seem unnecessary but it prevents damage to the window and door by the AutoBuster.

  2. Step 2

Insert the down end of the AutoBuster with the handle facing straight up into the space between the window and the locked car door. Make sure you put the tool forward (towards the engine) of the manual lock button so you don't get the AutoBuster caught in the linkages in the door.

  3. Step 3

Insert a purposed locksmith wedge if the window of the car is very tight against the locked door.

  4. Step 4

Drive the AutoBuster tool downward as far as you can without forcing the tool lower and get it underneath the bottom of the window. Rotate the tool 90 degrees in the direction that will make the end of the tool perpendicular to the door and slightly lift the tool upwards.

  5. Step 5

Unlock the locked door by using the tool's end to press an unlock button, push a thumb button or lift a straight up and down lock on older car models.
