The area of play in lacrosse differs for men and women. In men's lacrosse, there is a scoring box and a subbing box that are not used in the women's game. In order to stay in bounds during a game, it's vital to understand the dimensions of the field and the areas of legal play.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Recognize the perimeter of the field and the boundaries of legal play. Note that the men's field is 70 by 40 yards with goals 50 yards apart. Alternatively, the women's field is 110 by 60 yards with goals no less than 90 yards apart.

  2. Step 2

Notice that there is a minimum of 10 yards of playing area behind each goal in both men and women's lacrosse. Use this area regulation play at any time.

  3. Step 3

Understand that you will be out of bounds by stepping on or over the sidelines with one or both feet. Knock a ball out of play by hitting it onto or over the sidelines. Hang a stick over the sidelines and still be in bounds.

  4. Step 4

Stay out of the crease or goal circle, the area encircling the goal. Interface with the goalie only if the goalie comes out to the edge or out of the crease.

  5. Step 5

Give the goalie 4 seconds (for men) or 10 seconds (for women) to clear the ball from the crease after a save. Leave the goalie unchecked during this time.

  6. Step 6

Recover a ball that crosses the end line for team possession. Expect the player closest to the ball to scramble for it.
