One of the most important skills to learn in playing lacrosse is holding the stick in the proper position. By keeping the head of the stick in the "box," which is the area above each shoulder, you can pass, receive and shoot the ball with efficiency and strength.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Mirror
  • Dry erase marker
  • Lacrosse stick
  • Lacrosse ball
  1. Step 1

Imagine a 1 foot square area above each shoulder. This is the box. Visualize this space by looking in a mirror and drawing squares over your shoulders with a dry erase marker or window marker.

  2. Step 2

Hold your lacrosse stick across your body with 1 hand up near the plastic head and the other hand about 2/3 of the way down. Keep the head of the stick up in the box, next to your ear, rather than resting directly on your shoulder or down by your side. Practice holding it on both sides so you can shoot with either hand if necessary.

  3. Step 3

Cradle the ball while running by twisting the stick from side to side, keeping the pocket of the stick in the box. Keeping the ball high up by your ear makes it more difficult for opponents to knock it out of the pocket.

  4. Step 4

Pass the lacrosse ball from the box by quickly bringing the head of the stick down and forward. Catch a pass by always keeping the pocket in the box to provide a visible target for your teammates.
