The breath of fire is a series of rhythmic cleansing and energizing breaths through the nose that are controlled by the abdominal muscles. It is a Kundalini yoga practice that is similar to pumping bellows into a fire. The breath of fire can be a very relaxing and energizing process to add to your Kundalini yoga practice.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Sit up in a comfortable position, such as the lotus or cross legged position to begin your breath of fire.

  2. Step 2

Rest your hand on your stomach and breathe in through your nose until your stomach forces your arm to extend.

  3. Step 3

Draw your navel into your spine and inhale once more through your nose, then exhale through your nose. Pressing your navel into your spine forces the air out of your lungs.

  4. Step 4

Inhale and exhale through the nose two more times, and then speed it up several times breathing quickly. As you get more comfortable with this Kundalini yoga breathing movements, speed your breaths up a bit.

  5. Step 5

Slow your breathing down as you finish up your breath of fire.

Tips & Warnings
  • Keep your breathing even, and don't emphasize the inhale more than the exhale.
  • If you find the quick breathes are uncomfortable, slow back down until you find a comfortable pattern.
  • If you're having trouble finding a comfortable patter of the breath of fire, find a qualified Kundalini yoga instructor in your area to help you.
  • Try closing off your right nostril during your breaths. Keep your slow, rhythmic breathing through your left nostril only, but if you begin to feel dizzy, stop.
