Krav maga is the self defense system developed by pioneers of the Israeli Defense Forces that focuses on quick, practical and devastating blows to incapacitate your opponent. Gaining a solid introduction to the system is important for newcomers, especially for those who have martial arts backgrounds.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Leave your ideas about forms, belts, dojos and intricate displays at the door of your krav maga studio since the system is all about what's practical. Check out the website of the International Federation of Krav Maga for an introduction to the thinking behind the self defense system.

  2. Step 2

Understand that krav maga is not a fighting sport and is not intended to be used voluntarily but only in situations when an aggressor or multiple aggressors introduce violence into a given situation. On this basis, you should start to absorb the idea that krav maga intends to end fights as quickly as possible, without waiting on points of tradition or decorum.

  3. Step 3

Lose the idea that there is such a thing as a "fair fight," a "sucker punch" or an "illegal hold." These are concepts that come from sports fighting and have no place in krav maga's approach to self defense.

  4. Step 4

Begin to workout for explosive power, not long distance steady state conditioning, by using plyometrics, fast paced bodyweight exercise or explosive power lifting to get yourself into better condition to use krav maga in real life situations.

  5. Step 5

Watch video of real life fighting situations at an amateur and professional level to get used to the idea of brutal attacks. Hesitation on account of fear is the one thing that will certainly hinder your progress through krav maga so getting used to the idea of a head butt or elbow to the nose is an unpleasant necessity in preparing for krav maga.
