Koden kan karate is a form of martial arts that Michael Foley has developed over 25 years. Combining the techniques of shoto kan, judo, aikido amongst others, koden kan karate focuses on a hand-to-hand combat fighting method. As in most martial arts forms, the roundhouse kick is one of the basic building blocks of koden kan karate.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Begin in the koden kan karate zenkutsu stance. Stand with your feet about hip width apart and then step back about 3 feet with your dominant leg. Your back leg should be straight with the foot turned slightly out. Bend your front knee and lean your body weight forward.

  2. Step 2

Prepare for the roundhouse kick by lifting your hands into the set position. Form fists with your hands and bend your elbows, lifting your fists to chest level so that you are prepared to both attack and block.

  3. Step 3

Shift your weight onto your front foot and then draw your back leg forward, bending the knee up towards your chest. Point your toes towards the ground. Rotate your hips and pivot on your standing foot. Your kicking leg should now be positioned so that your shin is parallel to the ground and your knee is pointing towards your target.

  4. Step 4

Draw your heel in as close to your buttocks as possible and then kick out strong, impacting your target with the top of your foot and bringing your heel back to your buttocks. Quickly pivot your foot again so that it is pointing forward as your return your knee to its first lifted position. Relax your leg back into the zenkutsu stance.

  5. Step 5

Keep your hands up in set position throughout the entire roundhouse kick. Practice the kick slowly, step by step, until you have mastered every part. Once you have perfected the move you can begin to work on speeding it up.
