Take the first step towards knitting your sweater or scarf by knitting your very first stitch. Once you knit the first stitch, you simply continue the process to finish your project. Sometimes, for involved projects, you may use more than one type of stitch or better techniques, but for easy projects, you simply use the regular knit stitch.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Knitting needles
  • Yarn
  1. Step 1

Pick up the needle with the stitches on it in your left hand. Hold the needle with your thumb and forefinger and the rest of the fingers wrapped around the needle.

  2. Step 2

Take the other needle in your right hand. Hold it with your fingers positioned as in Step 1.

  3. Step 3

Separate the first stitch slightly from the rest of the stitches. Hold your arms where it is comfortable to work on your knitting. You will develop your own knitting techniques as you continue to knit.

  4. Step 4

Insert the right hand needle into the first stitch on the left hand needle. Extend your left hand fingers to grasp both needles in the left hand.

  5. Step 5

Wrap the yarn around the right hand needle from back to front. Use the yarn that attaches to your ball of yarn. There is also a tail on your yarn but do not use that.

  6. Step 6

Bring the right hand needle through the loop you just made with the yarn. This forms a new stitch on the right hand needle.

  7. Step 7

Drop the stitch you just worked off the left hand needle. Your first knit stitch is completed. Repeat Steps 3 through 7 for the rest of the stitches on the left hand needle. Learn new techniques as you progress.
