You can make your own musical instruments out of ordinary items around the house. A xylophone can be made out of glass containers or wine glasses and varying levels of water.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

  • 8 wine glasses, glass jars or drinking glasses
  • Pitcher of water
  • Metal spoon

Step1
Choose 8 wine glasses, drinking glasses or jars. Anything made of glass is fine. This works better if all the glasses are the same size or relatively the same size.
Step2
Arrange the 8 wine glasses in a row on a table in front of you.
Step3
Start with the second glass from the left and pour just a little bit of water into the glass from your pitcher of water.
Step4
Pour water in the third glass from the right. Put in a little more than you did in the first glass.
Step5
Hit the glasses with a spoon, starting with the empty glass and going down the row to make sure you are getting the right sounds.
Step6
Pour more water in the glasses as you need, or switch out the glasses to get them so that the tones are in order when you hit the glasses with the spoon.

Tips & Warnings

  • Pour more water in the glasses as you need, or switch out the glasses to get them so that the tones are in order when you hit the glasses with the spoon.
