Things You'll Need:
- Drill
- 1/8-inch bit
- Screwdriver
- Chisel, optional
- Keyless lock
- Pencil
-
Step 1
Assemble the tools. You need a drill with an 1/8-inch bit and a screwdriver. Use either a Phillips or standard screwdriver. The type of screwdriver you use depends on what the old lock requires.
-
Step 2
Check the location of the existing deadbolt. The preparation for the keyless entry lock is simple if you use the existing opening. You need to adjust for size on some lock openings. Draw around the new lock and chisel out the new area.
-
Step 3
Remove the old lock. Unscrew the bolts on both sides of the lock and pull them out. The backside may fall so keep your hand behind the other side of the lock when you remove the screws.
-
Step 4
Check the measurement of the backset. Most are 2 3/8 inches. You can make a simple adjustment on the latch, if necessary. The latch twists and you can make it 2 3/4 or 2 3/8 inches with a twist of the wrist.
-
Step 5
Look at the outside keypad. The back of the keypad is a removable plastic piece with numbers and an electronic cable attached. This is what makes the keyless portion work.
-
Step 6
Slide the cable over the top of the latch and line up the lock. You now have everything in place to install the keyless entry deadbolt.
