Influenced by both Japanese and Chinese martial arts such as tai chi, jiu jitsu and kung fu, kenpo karate has become one of the most popular karate styles taught in the United States today. With more than 700 self-defense moves as well as strikes and kicks, the racking mace is just one of many American kenpo karate techniques you can begin practicing today.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Use the kenpo racking mace technique as a self-defense method against a power grab. A power grab is when your attacker grips your clothing at the chest and pulls you forward.

  2. Step 2

Begin by diverting your attacker's head. As he is gripping your clothing at your chest, lift your left arm and either poke him in the eye or hit him with a hand sword to the side of the face. Continue the movement of your left arm across your body and above his arms. Grip his wrist opposite your arm, crossing over his inside arm, and hold him firmly, trapping his arms.

  3. Step 3

Swing your right fist up hard and fast striking to either the ribcage or the armpit of your attacker. Pull your right hand back to chamber quickly and throw another punch to the nose. Again, continue the motion of your right arm, crossing over your attacker's arms, this time bringing the weight of your arms down onto the crooks of her elbows, forcing her to bend forward.

  4. Step 4

Throw a hand chop to your attacker's throat with your right hand as he is bent over and then push down against the top of his arms with both or your arms, releasing yourself from the grab.

  5. Step 5

Complete the kenpo racking mace technique by sandwiching your attacker's neck with a double blow. Swing in to the neck with your right elbow as you strike the opposite side of the neck with a left hand sword.
