With more than 700 self-defense techniques as well as kicks and strikes, American kenpo karate is influenced by both Chinese and Japanese martial arts styles, including tai chi, kung fu and jiu jitsu. Maybe the most popular form of karate taught in the United States, the obscure wing technique is just one of many movements in kenpo karate that you can begin practicing today.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Use the kenpo obscure wing technique as a method of self defense when someone grabs your right shoulder from behind.

  2. Step 2

Begin by lifting your left arm and crossing your body, gripping the attacker's wrist firmly so that he cannot hit you in the face. Hold your attacker's wrist firmly throughout the entire movement to prevent counter attack. As he pulls back, allow him to pull you with him. The backward motion will help add moment to your first strike.

  3. Step 3

Bend your right arm, first pushing forward to gain momentum and then pull your upper arm back hard and fast. Your arm just above the elbow should impact her ribs while your elbow lands hard into the solar plexus.

  4. Step 4

Drop your right fist immediately, throwing a hammer punch to the groin area, forcing your attacker to bend forward. As he falls forward, finish the kenpo obscure wing movement by using the upswing of your right arm to strike him in the chin with your elbow.

  5. Step 5

Use the opening that you have created to escape and call for help. Practice each step of this kenpo technique slowly until you have perfected every move. Only once you have mastered the entire movement should you begin working on speed and strength.
