American kenpo karate is a martial art which is influenced by both Japanese and Chinese fighting styles, including jiu jitsu and kung fu. Focusing on more than 700 self-defense techniques as well as strikes and kicks, kenpo may be the most common form of karate taught in the United States. The flashing wings movement is just one of many kenpo moves you can begin practicing today.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Use the kenpo flashing wings technique as a self-defense method to block an incoming right straight punch.

  2. Step 2

Step your right foot over your left as your attacker throws his punch so that you move in a diagonal motion to the side and towards your attacker, avoiding the punch's impact. Lift your right hand and block the punch just above the elbow with your wrist or lower forearm.

  3. Step 3

Bend your left arm and strike his upper arm above his elbow with your forearm, near your elbow, before stepping in and swinging your right elbow into his lower ribcage. Extend your elbow behind your attacker's back and then reverse your elbow's motion on the downswing, bringing it in hard and fast to his back just below the shoulder blade.

  4. Step 4

Drop your right hand, throwing a kenpo hand sword to the back of your attacker's neck with a chopping motion and following up with the same hand sword motion with your left hand. Bring your left arm quickly down to your attacker's right arm in order to prevent a blow to your groin or stomach.

  5. Step 5

Complete the kenpo flashing wings technique by swinging up with your right hand, striking your attacker in the face with a hand sword as he is bent forward and then kick quickly at the back of the knees, dropping him to the ground.
