American kenpo karate is a martial art which takes it's influence from both Japanese and Chinese fighting styles, including jiu jitsu, kung fu and tai chi. With over 700 self-defense techniques as well as many kicks and strikes, kenpo may be the most common form of karate taught in the United States. The five swords technique is just one of many kenpo moves you can begin practicing today.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Use the kenpo five swords technique to block a right round house punch in either competition or as a method of self-defense. This is an extremely versatile move which, once mastered, can be adapted for a number of situations.

  2. Step 2

Step into the punch with your right foot, lifting both of your hands. Strike your opponent's punching arm with the outside of your left palm as you strike the upper arm with a hammer fist. Immediately move your right hand up to your opponent's neck, striking with the side of your palm in a chopping motion.

  3. Step 3

Draw your right arm back to your body into chamber as you move your left arm up quickly, with your fingertips held tightly together, to poke your attacker in the eye. Pull your left arm back to chamber and swing a punch with your right arm to the solar plexus.

  4. Step 4

Bring your left arm up across your chest as you are swinging the right punch, so that upon completion you can quickly throw a chopping hand sword to the throat and then follow up with a right chopping hand sword to the outside of the neck, finishing the kenpo five swords technique.
