Finally, you have your own dirt bike and you want to mix it up with the seasoned riders. However, it's important to take your time and learn each skill before you progress to the next one. Before you can safely navigate jumps and stunts, you must master the basics.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Gather the protective gear required for a safe ride. You need the minimum of a helmet, motocross boots and knee and elbow pads. A chest protector and specially-designed protective apparel make good additions.

  2. Step 2

Get comfortable on your bike. Take the time to get the feel of the bike and the terrain. The more you practice, the more confident you will become with riding.

  3. Step 3

Learn the parts of your bike. When you understand the function of each component, you are better able to operate your bike safely.

  4. Step 4

Adjust your dirt bike to fit you. Some parts of your bike have variable settings, allowing you to customize your riding experience. Your hands should rest comfortably on the handlebars. Adjust them until you can ride without elbow fatigue.

  5. Step 5

Read your owner's manual for specific instructions on how to adjust the foot pegs. They should be high enough that you can navigate a turn without dragging but not so high that your knees are uncomfortable.

  6. Step 6

Sign up for motocross lessons. Although you can learn to ride your bike by yourself, you will progress through the basics quicker if a qualified instructor observes your technique and corrects errors before they become bad habits.
