How to Execute the Ude Gatame Straight Arm Lock

Founded in 1882, judo is a popular martial art form which is being taught around the world as a competitive sport, a fitness method, a form of self-defense and a way of life. Based on the ancient Japanese fighting style jujutsu, judo, or "the gentle way," focuses on throwing techniques, balance, leverage and flexibility. The ude gatame straight armlock is just one example of many judo techniques.

Instructions
  1. Step 1

    Use the judo straight armlock technique in competition or as an effective means of self defense when someone grabs your sleeve. This move can be executed very quickly to catch your opponent or attacker completely off guard.

  2. Step 2

    Turn towards your attacker or your opponent as they grab you by the arm or sleeve. Lift the arm that he has grabbed, pushing your elbow out, and wrap your arm around the bottom and outside of his so that your palm is cupping his elbow. This motion will force his hand into the crook of your elbow.

  3. Step 3

    Grip the elbow joint tightly with your fingers and bring your opposite hand up and over, cupping the top of your hand. Lock your attacker's or opponent's arm in place by lifting your elbow even further as you grip her elbow tightly.

  4. Step 4

    Turn your body in as you pull the elbow towards your body and step backwards to complete the judo straight armlock. This painful technique will force your attacker or opponent quickly to the ground. Practice this technique in order to gain precision and speed, as performing the armlock quickly is key to making it work successfully.
