Judo is a Japanese style martial art which was founded in 1882. Based on the ancient fighting technique jujutsu, judo, or "the gentle way," focuses on leverage, balance and flexibility. Judo is a popular competitive sport but is also taught around the world as a fitness method, a self-defense system and a way of life. The juji gatame cross lock is just one example of many common judo moves.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Use the juji gatame cross lock technique from the ground or from a throw. This technique is one of the most common and most versatile judo moves, so mastering it early in your practice can help you both to foresee it's use by your opponent and to execute the move yourself. Begin the technique by throwing your opponent to the ground, or begin from a hold position on the ground.

  2. Step 2

Grab your opponent's wrist firmly with his palm facing away from you. You should press your thumbs into the back of the wrist between the bones while your fingers wrap around and overlap one another. Pull up on the arm moving it straight towards your face.

  3. Step 3

Lift the arm as you slip your bent lower leg under your opponent's body, preventing her from pulling her arm down. Your upper leg should swing over her head, under the chin, with the back of your ankle is hooking around her neck.

  4. Step 4

Fall back to the ground as you lift your lower leg and squeeze your legs together around your opponent's arm. Lift with the hips, pulling at the shoulder of your opponent to complete the juji gatame cross lock in judo.
