Judo is a martial art and Japanese fighting system founded in 1882. Meaning "the gentle way," Judo focuses on flexibility, balance and leverage. Based on the ancient martial art Jujutsu, judo is now taught around the world as a competitive sport, a self-defense technique and a way of life. The compression arm lock is used in judo to force an opponent to release an armlock.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Use the compression armlock in judo when you have your opponent on the ground and you cannot free him from his own armlock. With your opponent flat on the ground, you should be sitting at his side with your top leg over his neck and his wrist tightly gripped between both hands. In most cases your opponent will grip his own wrist with the opposite hand so that you cannot free the lock.

  2. Step 2

Make a fist with your lower arm and slip your forearm into the crook of your opponent's elbow. The elbow joint should rest against your arm just above the wrist with the underside of your forearm, or the palm of your hand, facing towards your body.

  3. Step 3

Press the fist of your lower arm into the crook of your opposite elbow to gain leverage. Then lift your upper arm and place your wrist over the wrist of your opponent. Your hand should be curled into a fist facing down towards your opponent's chest.

  4. Step 4

Push down with your upper arm as you lean back to execute the judo compression armlock. This movement causes extreme pain to your opponent and will force her to release her own grip and release her armlock, giving you the upper hand.
