A unique combination of judo and jujutsu, Brazilian jiu jitsu is a form of martial arts which is quickly becoming popular in the United States as a competitive combat sport. Jiu jitsu aims to dominate the opponent using a variety of ground fighting techniques such as choke holds and joint locks. The standing sweep is just one advanced jiu jitsu technique that can be administered from the guard position.

From Quick Guide: Learn Brazilian Jiu Jitsu
Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Use the jiu jitsu standing sweep when you have your opponent locked in a guard position and he moves to a standing position. When you have your opponent in the guard position, you are laying flat on your back and your opponent is on his knees, leaning over your chest with his palms flat on your torso. Your legs are wrapped around his waist with your ankles locked behind him.

  2. Step 2

Keep your ankles locked tight around his waist as he stands and lifts your lower body up off of the floor. Quickly take hold of his ankles before he has a change to step back out of reach.

  3. Step 3

Open your guard by releasing your ankles and dropping your hips to the mat. Hold your knees together tightly as you pull his ankles towards you and push against his chest and mid-section with your legs.

  4. Step 4

Push your entire body up quickly, moving up and over his body into a straddle hold.

Tips & Warnings
  • The standing sweep is an advanced jiu jitsu move and should be practiced slowly and with caution in order to prevent serious injury to both you and your partner.
