Brazilian jiu jitsu is a form of martial arts which was created from a combination of jujutsu and judo techniques. Becoming more popular in the United States as a competitive combat sport, jiu jitsu uses a combination of joint locks, choke holds and on the ground fighting to gain dominance over the opponent. The open leg lock is just one advanced jiu jitsu technique used to break the guard position.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Use the jiu jitsu open leg lock when you are on the ground in guard position. In guard position, your opponent is flat on his back and you are on your knees facing him. His legs are wrapped tightly around your waist with his ankles locked behind you and you are leaning forward with your palms on his chest.

  2. Step 2

Move your hands down and grip his belt tightly, keeping your elbows in tight to your body. Bring your left knee up to your side and place the sole of your foot firmly into the ground.

  3. Step 3

Release your left arm from the belt and slip it under his right leg so that you can grip your left ankle. Maintain a firm grip on his belt with your right hand. Slowly begin to move your left foot out and up as you maintain your hold. This move will push against his sensitive inner thigh, forcing his legs open.

  4. Step 4

Let go of your ankle when you feel his ankles open and push against the back of is right leg with your entire left arm. Turn your body as you fall down onto his chest and enter into jiu jitsu side control.
