Making a knotted hemp necklace is a great project to occupy the kids on a rainy day, and it's environmentally friendly too. You can use traditional designs or experiment with something new. All it takes is a little patience and a lot of string.

Instructions

Difficulty: Challenging
Step1
Cut a piece of hemp about 3 or 4 yards long and fold it in half.
Step2
Start one end of your hemp jewelery by knotting the end, leaving a loop created by the doubled hemp. This will become part of your item's fastener.
Step3
Secure your hemp to an object, such as a chair, table or clipboard.
Step4
Hold the center two pieces of hemp in one hand and place the left strand loosely over the center strings. The shape you're left with should look like a "9" or a backwards letter "P."
Step5
Place the right piece of hemp on top of the previously placed left piece. Thread it under the center strands and through the loop created by the left and center strings of hemp. At this point, the left piece should be on the right of the two center strings and the right piece of hemp should be on the left.
Step6
Make this into a square knot by starting with the right strand of hemp and making a loop by laying it over the center strands.
Step7
Pull the left string under the middle and through the loop created by the right strand of hemp and the center strings to complete the square knot.
