According to the National Insurance Crime Bureau, a car is stolen every 26.4 seconds. You want to make sure that your vintage car isn't one of them. Some common sense tips, as well as safety devices, can help ensure that your beloved car doesn't wind up in the wrong hands.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Use common sense when it comes to your car. Never leave the keys in the ignition. Lock the doors and close all windows and sunroofs. Keep your car in a garage if possible. Always park in well-lit areas and don't leave anything of value visible in the car. Install an alarm to sound if someone tampers with your car. Put security stickers on the windows.

  2. Step 2

Lock your steering wheel with a steering wheel club. This device prevents the steering wheel from turning, making the car not drivable.

  3. Step 3

Boot one of the tires on the car. The locking device prevents the wheel from spinning so the car will not drive. Deflate the tires on your vintage car to deter thieves from stealing it.

  4. Step 4

Take out the battery from your car. The car will not run without it.

  5. Step 5

Remove the distributor cap and take out the rotor. You can also remove the central ignition wire. Store the parts somewhere secure until you put them back on the car.

  6. Step 6

Disable the fuel system so the car will not run. You can do this by disconnecting the main feed and plugging it or just letting it hang disconnected. You can also purchase a locking gas cap, which prevents someone without the key from opening the gas tank. Leave little gas in your car so thieves won't get far if they do take it.

  7. Step 7

Avoid leaving your car in gear. Some vintage cars have buttons that have to be pushed in order to put the car in to gear. Leave it in the wrong gear to deter theft.

  8. Step 8

Install a tracking device on your car. The device will assist in recovering your car quickly, if someone steals it.

  9. Step 9

Register with a car club. There is a specific market for vintage cars and their parts. Registering with a car club increases the number of people who will be on the look out for thieves trying to sell the car or it's parts.
