Spending your money wisely is the essence of indie filmmaking. When it comes to the equipment you'll be using, you have to get a lot of bang for your buck without breaking the bank. Follow these steps to help you pick an indie film camera.

Difficulty: Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Choose whether your film will be shot in digital or film format. This will set both the tone and look of the film as well as the price of your camera.

  2. Step 2

Research the benefits of digital over film and vice-versa. With digital you'll be able to edit, right away, while film will require the negative being processed. However, in both cases, you'll have to pay to get a print made, which will ultimately affect your bottom line.

  3. Step 3

Put aside several thousand dollars for the purchase of your camera. You may be able to find a suitable piece for less; if so, the money can be allocated elsewhere.

  4. Step 4

Decide what style your film is going to be shot in. The "look" you are going for will determine the type of camera you will need for your indie feature.

  5. Step 5

Shoot your film handheld and you will need a shoulder-mounted camera for "steady shots." Without this, you will produce a shaky style, unless this is what you are going for.

  6. Step 6

Arrange your budget to allow for equipment like lighting and sound. Buying a camera that is too expensive can leave you with little room for other essentials.
