How to Hunt Using Grunting Techniques

One way to increase your chances of a successful deer hunt is through a mindful application of grunting techniques. The deer grunt can often cause deer to move when nothing else will work. This basic hunting skill can be mastered with a little practice and common sense in the field.

Instructions

    • 1

Position yourself so that the grunt call carries a maximum distance. Putting yourself in a deep hollow or behind a dense screen of foliage only dampens your grunt call techniques.

    • 2

Select the appropriate type of grunt call depending on the time of the season. For early season use the higher pitched yearling, for mid season use the middle reed mature setting, saving the more deep pitched aggressive grunt setting for estrous time only.

    • 3

Grunt in even intervals if there is no deer activity in the immediate area. Proper grunting techniques during a hunt require you to exercise restraint and not fall prey to the desire to grunt every few minutes; once per 20 minutes is considered acceptable.

    • 4

Respond to actual deer grunting with a short grunt of your own. This technique can sometimes redirect deer to your hunting position.

Tips & Warnings

  • Keep your grunt call out while you hunt in case you need to lay your hands on it quickly. The delay involved in searching through your knapsack can allow the deer to move out of ear shot.

  • Refrain from grunting if the deer is under 30 yards. A deer this close can pinpoint your location and will probably spook before a clean shot presents itself.
