Step 1
Purchase gaffed or gimmick coins from a good magic shop where you can get a demonstration of how to use them, especially if you're a beginner. If you're buying the coins online, see if the retailer has a video to illustrate the coins in use.
-
Step 2
Read the instructions that come with a gaffed or gimmick coin to find out if it has multiple uses. Because these coins are self-contained tricks that you purchase, they will also come with specific instructions for use, but they may have one main trick and several other tricks you can use them for.
-
Step 3
Keep your gaffed and gimmick coins separate from standard coins. Trick coins are designed to look, feel and sound real, so it's easy to confuse them with real coins, especially if the gimmick is very subtle (like a coin with two heads or two tails).
-
Step 4
Get a good variety of gaffed and gimmick coins. A 2two-headed coin, a two-sided coin (with gold on one side and silver on the other, for example), and a coin sheath (a thin coin face that the coin fits into when you change hands) are all good pieces that will create very different effects.
-
Step 5
Mix coin tricks in with other tricks that you can purchase like trick deck card tricks if you're a beginning magician. Even if you're just starting out, there are plenty of coin tricks and card tricks (the magician's staple tricks) that can be done by an inexperienced magician.
