One frequently-used tool in woodworking is the router. A router can cut a variety of decorative corners, based on the bit used. Used correctly, it can also cut all the molding required to finish a room in your home. Installing and removing the bit from the head is straightforward and you will find instructions in the owner's manual. Here is a brief overview of the process.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Ruler
  • 2 wrenches to fit the head of the router
  1. Step 1

Depress the base plate of the router and lock it in position. This exposes the head of the router where the bit is mounted. Most models have a base plate so that the router has a level plane to guide along when performing its purpose.

  2. Step 2

Use the two wrenches to unscrew the head from the shaft of the router. Once the head turns freely, unscrew it and remove the collet that holds the bit in place. Pull the bit free from the collet and replace with the bit you plan to use next.

  3. Step 3

Reinsert the collet into the head and re-screw the head to the shaft. Use the two wrenches to tighten the head back onto the shaft. When inserting the bit into the collet, leave between 1/8 and 1/16 inches between the cutting edge and the face of the head.

  4. Step 4

Unlock the base plate and test the new bit on a piece of scrap wood. You will need to adjust the depth of the cut by adjustments of the position of the base plate.
