Straightening hair with a hot comb requires practice and knowledge of how the heat affects your hair type. Using a hot comb is not a permanent hair straitening option, but it does allow for additional hairstyle choices without using chemical relaxers.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Shampoo
  • Conditioner
  • Hair dryer
  • Comb
  • Heat protector
  • Pressing comb
  • Hair clips
  1. Step 1

Wash, condition and blow dry hair before using the pressing comb. Comb the hair out to reduce tangles. Using a comb part the hair into four to six smaller sections. Add a heat protector such as Paul Mitchell's seal and shine to the hair.

  2. Step 2

Heat the pressing comb at a medium setting on the stovetop. Test the comb before using it on the hair by touching it on a towel. If the pressing comb burns the towel then it is too hot and may scorch or burn the hair. Let the comb cool off.

  3. Step 3

Start with one of the sections at the back of the neckline and clip the other sections out of the way. Slowly comb through one row of hair with the hot pressing comb. Begin combing at the roots moving to the ends. Twist your wrist as you comb using the back of the comb to straighten not the comb's teeth.

  4. Step 4

Reheat the comb after pressing the hair several times. Smooth the hair using the back of the pressing comb. To finish, press the hairline.

  5. Step 5

Use different sizes for the new shorter hair around the hairline versus longer hair.

Tips & Warnings
  • Pressed styles last about two to three days.
  • Avoid applying too much heat since it damages hair much like a relaxer.
