How to Prevent Diseases in Homing Pigeons

Breeding homing pigeons is a hobby that many people enjoy. They can fly at an average speed of 30 miles per hour and can even reach speeds of up to 60 miles per hour. Records indicate that pigeons can fly distances of up to 1689 miles. If you breed pigeons, it's important to identify symptoms of disease early to keep it from spreading.

Instructions

    • 1

Keep the loft clean and dry.

    • 2

Feed your pigeons a diet consisting of pellets and seeds twice daily. Most feed stores carry the pellets. It's also important to provide clean water for your pigeons.

    • 3

Deworm your pigeons every 3 months. You can do this by giving them fibosims or sestophym. Follow the directions on the container.

    • 4

Check their droppings at night. If you notice that the droppings are loose, white or green, you have an ill pigeon. Immediately separate him from the rest and treat him.

    • 5

Keep new pigeons separately for 10 days to make sure that they're not ill. It's important to do this because disease generally comes from the outside. Once you know that they're healthy, you can introduce them into the loft. In addition, avoid contact with other birds. In particular, chickens can carry disease causing agents that can make your pigeons ill.

    • 6

Give your pigeons a chemical bath every 4months to get rid of fleas. Mix dog insecticide with water and dip the pigeon in the solution.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you happen to come in contact with other birds, make sure you change your clothes and shoes before handling your pigeons.
