A homecoming mum is a sign that someone cares for the wearer. Mums are given to people such as boyfriends, friends, and family members. They are often lavish in both size and decoration. Many people attach plastic trinkets such as chains to their homecoming mums.

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Select the chain that you want to use. There are a variety of plastic trinkets available in craft stores.

  2. Step 2

Assemble the initial mum base to include a complete or partial nest and attach the mum. Some individuals like to put streamers on the first base shield, while others make a complete nest on the first shield and add a secondary shield for streamers.

  3. Step 3

Figure out where you want to put the chain on your homecoming mum. You can place chains as part of the streamers or directly on the mum.

  4. Step 4

Use a hot glue gun to glue the chain end to the second base if using them as part of the streamers. If you want a loop chain effect, take the two ends and place them on the base shield. Adjust the chain ends so that the chain loop widens (move the chain ends apart) or closes inward (move the chain ends together) to get your desired design.

  5. Step 5

Position the chain on the mum and around the next if planning to attach it as a main decoration for the mum. A nice trick is to make sure to tuck the ends into the ribbon to hide the ends of the chain.
