Hockey sticks come in many forms. You can get wooden, aluminum and graphite hockey sticks. You can use hockey sticks in roller hockey, field hockey and ice hockey. The head of a hockey stick can vary depending on the sport you are playing, although roller hockey and ice hockey sticks are relatively the same. Hockey sticks also come in a variety of lengths--from 26 inches to 38½ inches.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Find a hockey stick for field hockey. Along with choosing a wooden, aluminum or graphite hockey stick, you also have to choose which head is best suited for your game. There are four different types of heads to choose from--the "shorti", "midi", "maxi" and the "J hook."

  2. Step 2

Select the "shorti" head when you need to exercise extreme control over the ball and want to increase your maneuverability. Most players who play mid-field positions in field hockey use this type of head.

  3. Step 3

Choose a "midi" head when you are hitting the ball often and need a wider area for hitting the ball. Usually the player who uses this head is in an up-front position in field hockey.

  4. Step 4

Use a "maxi" head when you need more area for hitting the ball, but you are a defensive player. This head is excellent to use when you need a stick that will stop the ball. Mostly defensive players use it along with players who are in an attacking position in field hockey.

  5. Step 5

Get a "J Hook" head when you need a hockey stick that is thicker than a "maxi" and doesn't have the effectiveness of the "midi". The additional thickness of this stick makes it the best one to use for stopping the ball and defenders use it in field hockey.

  6. Step 6

Buy an ice hockey stick--which you can also use in roller hockey. These sticks can be 150-200 cm long and the heads are blades. The blades can be 25 to 40 cm long. These sticks can also be wood, aluminum or graphite.
