Sewing needles for hemming pants are available in three basic sizes, small, medium and large. The larger the needle, the duller the point and a bigger hole is left when it penetrates the fabric. The main factor when choosing a needle is the thickness of the thread, which is determined by the type of material used for the pants.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Thread
  • Assorted needle sizes
  • Thimble
  1. Step 1

Examine the pants material that needs hemming. Identify the fabric and whether it's double or single layered. Define thick materials as either wool, leather or polyester, and medium materials as cotton or linen and thin materials as silk or rayon.

  2. Step 2

Gather the thread. Use a thick thread for wool and leather. Reinforce layered garment with thick the thread as well. Work with a large eyed needle when using thick threads such as embroidery floss.

  3. Step 3

Test the thread through the eye of the different needles to find the best match. Choose a needle that threads easily, but is still a close fit to the thread.

Tips & Warnings
  • The eye of the needle is too small if the thread splits apart or shreds as it goes through the hole.
  • Be careful when hemming thick fabric. Consider using a thimble to avoid getting stuck with the needle.
