Things You'll Need:
- Pants
- Matching thread
- Needle
- Scissors
- Tape measure
-
Step 1
Choose a thread color that will match the fabric and in the correct weight for the type and thickness of the pant material. A thin material will require a thinner thread and thicker material heavier thread.
-
Step 2
Use a needle size that is right for the job. Thicker materials will require a larger needle with a bigger eye.
-
Step 3
Measure around the cuff of the pants to determine how much thread will be needed to complete the task. You want enough to complete one whole cuff at a time.
-
Step 4
Allow extra thread for making the stitches and a knot at the end. Approximately a 3-foot-long piece will be necessary for one leg of cotton or fairly light weight dress pants and a 4 to 5-foot-long piece if you are working with a heavy material such as denim.
-
Step 5
Roll about 3 to 4 feet of thread off of the spool and then double it. You double the thread on the needle to make a stronger hem.
-
Step 6
Feed the thread through the eye of the needle, and continue pulling the thread through until the ends meet. Make a slip knot in the end of the thread and you are ready to hem your pants.
