Hapkido is a Korean martial art which differs from other martial arts in that instead of teaching attack technique, it teaches self-defense. Hapkido moves are specially designed blocks and counterattacks which teach students how to protect themselves against the attacks of common street criminals as well as skilled martial artists. The hapkido defense against a same side wrist grab is just one example of many techniques.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Use this hapkido technique, known as a break away, when your attacker grabs your wrist firmly. Begin by performing "live hand," a common hapkido defense strategy used to make your wrist larger in order to compromise the grip of your assailant.

  2. Step 2

Open your hand and spread your fingers as much as possible, allowing your wrist a bit of wiggle room.

  3. Step 3

Bring your arm in towards your body and step slightly to the side, towards your attacker. Move your elbow towards his, and when your elbows meet he should be forced to release his grip on your wrist.

  4. Step 4

Step your entire body back and prepare to block a second attack.

Tips & Warnings
  • Vary the hapkido break away wrist grab technique by pushing down after "live hand." Bend slightly at the knees as you push your hand down, forcing your attacker to release her grip. When your wrist is free, pick up your entire body to create a powerful force and lift your elbow up, striking her either under the chin or in the face.
  • Employ this technique when an attacker grabs your wrists to offer you a moment to escape, call for help or prepare for further attack.
